What We Do And Who We Are

Meet The Doctor

Cathleen Quillian, D.O., M. B. A., Fellow AAFP, Diplomat Obesity Medicine

I’m often asked why I decided to add Bariatric (Obesity and Weight Management) Medicine as a second specialty. In my practice as a Board-Certified Family Medicine physician over the last 21 years, it has become very clear to me that the majority of patients that I treat for chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoarthritis and high cholesterol, have a much more concerning chronic disease, that of being overweight or having obesity.

I chose to be a physician so that I could help people and make a real difference in their lives. To accomplish that goal, I need to treat what is often the root cause of their other problems, so I chose to become an expert in the field of obesity.

By helping patients to attain and maintain a healthy weight I can often reduce the number of medications that they take daily and decrease their annual as well as their lifetime health care costs. Patients who have a healthy BMI have fewer risks of developing heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and liver failure, GERD, gallbladder disease, cancer, arthritis requiring joint replacement, sleep apnea, and other issues that require frequent visits to the doctor, costly studies, labs, exorbitant hospital bills, and numerous expensive medications.

Effectively managing weight loss and obesity requires a wholistic approach that includes the four pillars of Obesity Medicine, (nutrition, physical activity, behavioral counseling, and medication as needed). Further, the course of treatment must include a reducing phase, an adapting phase, and a maintenance phase, with the understanding that being overweight or having obesity is in itself a chronic disease state that requires intensive treatment and long-term management and follow-up.
